Paris, Texas – Economic development took center stage this week as Deputy District Director Erik Simien for Congressman Pat Fallon’s office visited Paris, Texas, for a comprehensive tour organized by the Paris Economic Development Corporation (PEDC). The visit was marked by a series of engagements and discussions aimed at highlighting the strides made in economic growth and addressing the challenges and opportunities faced by the community.

“The hospitality shown to me exceeded my expectations, and I am grateful for all the thoughtfulness and care that went into my visit,” said Deputy District Director Erik Simien. “I had a very productive meeting discussing the future of Paris with leadership of the PEDC and City of Paris.”

The visit featured a comprehensive tour of the PEDC Industrial Parks, COX Field Airport, and a windshield tour that included major industries. The tour also offered an overview of other community assets that are crucial to the region’s economic landscape, such as historic Downtown Paris, Paris Junior College, and other significant points of interest.  Deputy District Director Simien met with local leaders, including Mayor Mihir Pankaj, Mayor Pro Tem Gary Savage, PEDC Board Chair Josh Bray, PEDC Treasurer Chase Coleman, PEDC Board Member Dr. AJ Hashmi, PEDC Board Member Stephen Terrell and Executive Director Maureen Hammond. These discussions provided a platform to review recent growth, funding challenges, and future opportunities.

“The visit was an exciting opportunity to highlight our city’s economic potential and the strides we are making in driving sustainable development,” said PEDC Board Chair Josh Bray. “It also underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling challenges and seizing new opportunities.”

Among the recent growth, the group discussed the PEDC’s significant achievements over the past four years. Among these accomplishments are:

• Supporting 13 projects representing 1,400 jobs and $400 million in new capital expenditures in Lamar County.

• Securing $1.3 Million in federal funding from the EDA for infrastructure improvements in the NW Industrial Park and 34th Street.

• Launching a community-wide branding campaign in partnership with the City of Paris, Visit Paris, and Lamar County Chamber of Commerce.

• Deploying a site visitation program for industry.

• Acquiring more than 300 acres of land for industrial clients, conducting phase I environmental assessments, and rezoning properties to make them shovel-ready.

• Strengthening partnerships with the county, city, Paris Junior College, Lamar County Chamber of Commerce, and other key stakeholders.

Executive Director Maureen Hammond remarked, “The tour provided an excellent platform to address funding challenges and opportunities. For instance, while Cox Airport is often recognized as a valuable asset, its lack of infrastructure hinders our ability to secure major aviation projects and leads. We discussed the need for updated master and engineering plans and substantial infrastructure improvements at Cox Field Airport in order to take advantage of its full capacity.”

The Deputy District Director’s visit emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared goals in driving economic prosperity. By working together, the community can continue to build on its successes and address the challenges ahead.

The PEDC remains committed to driving economic development in the region by working with its partners and the broader community.
